‘Sad story, beautifully written’ | 17 Days: The Shocking True Story of Dan’s Cancer Diagnosis, by Anne Logan Huxtable

This is a captivating and memorable book written in an intimate, engaging style.

Dan is 22 years old, a cheerful, 6 ft 4 rugby player and university student with a huge heart and a playful sense of humour. His joie de vivre shimmers through in the pictures his mum includes in this book. Dan is handsome with a wide smile and happy eyes. Mother and son are devoted to each other.

One weekend, Dan calls home complaining of feeling under the weather and his mother is quick to rush to his side to help cook him some nourishing meals and get him on his feet. She arrives to find him seriously unwell and vomiting blood, so she calls an ambulance.

At the hospital, doctors discover Dan has cancer all over his body and he is given just a few weeks to live, which turn out to be only 17 days. His devastated mother copes admirably well, distraught but so courageous.

My only quibble with this book is that I would have liked it to be longer, with more flashbacks to Dan’s childhood and teenage years. I still loved it though.

This book had me in tears but I managed to read it in one sitting. To lose a son is a parent’s worse nightmare and to lose a son within such a short space of time is literally heart breaking. Alot of it rings true….my mom lost her son when he was 20 years old to cancer, I was too young to understand what was actually happening. After reading this book it made me realise why my Mom is the person she is today and how her loss has affected the whole family. I would like to thank Anne Logan Huxtable for getting Dan’s story out there, he would be so proud of you.

A very sad story beautifully written. This book broke my heart. How can a healthy fit young man die so quickly? Thank God that Dan was surrounded by love and his family for the last 17 days of his life. I am so so sorry that this happened to such a lovely family.
