‘Genuinely incredible’ | Nearly 30, by Joe Woodhouse

Snapshots of Modern Life.

I was introduced to the poetry of Joe Woodhouse through his posts of haiku on Twitter. I really enjoyed this collection of haiku, rhyming, and prose poems. The poems are snapshots of modern life; many dealing with the pitfalls of technology such as two of my favorites “The Death of Pillow Talk” and “She, Her Selfie and I”. There is a good mix of humor and poignancy in the collection. Poems such as “Bring Me Shells” and “New Direction” strike an emotional chord without being overdone, reverberating long after the poems have been read. I would love to see an entire collection of haiku by this poet!

I happened upon Joe Woodhouse and “Nearly 30: 29 poems on turning 30 (Wordcatcher Modern Poetry)” via a search for haiku and found myself pleasantly entertained by all of the poetic variety; even those outside of Haiku. This collection is a clever snapshot of everyday life infusing humor and satire, and perhaps, a little evocative. There’s clearly a “regional voice” and “foreign readers” should appreciate the journey. For all of these reasons, this work receives my positive recommendation.

Nearly 30: 29 poems on turning 30 is a collection of poems dealing with a transition in life we must all make at some point. It makes sense, therefore, that it has resonated so well with the above reviewers.

Drawing on experiences before a landmark birthday, Nearly 30 is Joe Woodhouse’s exciting debut poetry collection. The digital revolution and the way it has fundamentally changed human existence; modern love, relationships and sex and the inescapable effects of ageing are all given moments in this structurally varied collection of poems.
