This is great story for reading out loud with kids. Firstly, because it’s a fun story filled with the kind of things children respond to: witches, magic, adventure and adults behaving badly. Secondly, because it’s written in a friendly and accessible style. And thirdly, because it gives you plenty of opportunity to ask your kids questions and start conversations along the way – “What do you think they’ll find round the corner?”; “How do you think they’ll escape?”, “What would you do next?” etc. Overall, a great read and nicely illustrated too.

My 11-year-old son really enjoyed this book. He says it was fun to read as it wasn’t too complicated but had enough story line to make it interesting. He said it was funny and the characters were good because there was only one bad character which was nice as he doesnt like baddies much. He liked that it was simple and clear so he could read and understand the story by himself.

He also like the made up creature and plants, he said they were funny too.

As a parent it was lovely to see my son finally reading independently. This book is great for building confidence in independent reading!

It’s a story which adults will enjoy reading to their children but equally children will enjoy reading it to their parents, it’s particularly good for children who are practicing their reading skills. An excellent debut by author Ade Bowen, it is both engaging and educational, worth a read!
