Typical Hesse, he delves into the mysterious, the mystical and the philosophical. Most of his work is in this style, exploring other world views and alternative philosophies of existence. This imagining of alternative realities reaches a zenith in his celebrated work The Glass Bead Game.
Demian is a dark, shadowy character who the young narrator meets. The mysterious stranger introduces the young man to new ways of thinking about the world around them. They are part of an underground group which feels they know of a form of reality that others have yet to see. If you have ever given this possibility any thought – whether you are a philosopher, a scientist, or neither – you will enjoy this.
I love Hesse for his ability to express the inexpressible, especially the spiritual (in the non-religious sense). His writing is superb and flows easily.
