Wordcatcher Publishing Group Ltd are recruiting for 12-week publishing/creative/marketing intern positions based in Cardiff, Wales. This is an unpaid, entry-level position, ideal for recent university graduates. The roles involve real responsibility and are suited to anyone looking to take their first step into the publishing sector.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are ready to learn a range of publishing skills and the challenges of working in a small press.

Publishing Assistant: Role / Responsibilities

  • introduction to relevant publishing organisations, terminology, software systems and legal requirements, all invaluable knowledge for someone new to the sector – e.g. Legal Library Deposit, Nielson, ISBNs 
  • clear and concise communication with authors and suppliers via phone, email, and face-to-face
  • training in the use of software to complete e-book conversion / upload
  • frequent experience with back-office metadata management system, responsible for creating and updating records
  • attendance at book launches and sales, exposure to stock management, customer interaction and the sale of books
  • opportunity to contribute to the online blog, experience of writing for real-world publication
  • production of content for social media accounts
  • required to give creative opinion, joining in with discussions regarding upcoming projects, book cover designs, etc
  • training in typesetting for print in line with Wordcatcher house styles
  • possible proofreading/editing experience, encouraged to address spelling and grammatical mistakes identified when typesetting
  • opportunity to write creative and engaging back cover blurbs
  • time and project management skills – required to update the office calendar/keep track of multiple projects at the same time
  • event planning experience, e.g. book launches, author talks, author meetings
  • exposure to the day-to-day management of a small business, including an understanding of invoicing, stock management and the other aspects of running a business

Graphic Design Assistant: Role / Responsibilities

  • using Photoshop to design a range of materials including book covers, flyers, banners, posters, etc
  • first-hand interaction with regards to briefing for projects
  • opportunity to contribute to published titles, offering the perfect start to any portfolio
  • creative contribution to the website / blog
  • feedback and training from an experienced book cover designer
  • handling and familiarity with a range of product styles / materials – paper types, cover finishes
  • understanding of printer requirements, spine widths, bleeds, etc

Marketing Assistant: Role / Responsibilities

  • first-hand interaction with regards to briefing for projects
  • good understanding of Facebook pages, profiles and groups
  • creative contribution to the website / blog
  • plan and deliver marketing activities according to the differing requirements of titles
  • creative flair and introduction of new ideas, while recognising the practicality of implementing them

Candidate Attributes (All Roles)

– a degree-level qualification or similar demonstrable experience
– experience using Microsoft Word / Photoshop
– availability to work in Cardiff office
– effective communication skills
– personable and friendly
– able to work in both a small team and independently
– a passion for books and the publishing sector
– a creative flair and an eye for detail
– social media experience is desirable
– confident enough to have an opinion and discuss it lucidly
– a desire to contribute to the development of a small business, while gaining valuable skills and experience to take to job interviews

The roles offers flexibility and will ideally be structured as two/three eight-hour days per week with the potential for occasional evening and weekend commitments when necessary for events.

There may be opportunities throughout the year for interns to visit a book printer to see how books are made and designs turned into physical products.
