The real deal.
I rarely say this about novels but to read Filled With Ghosts is to be taken under the spell of the author – taken into a kind of unpleasant, harsh, surreal and magical Spanish town where the stitching of reality, both internal and external to the protagonists, is falling apart. This is Karen Little’s most profound gift – she’s an amazingly strong and compelling narrator. She has the power to compel readers to follow her anywhere — quite extraordinary considering this is a first novel.
Her writing is also extremely lyrical, and Karen’s a writer with a genuine “way of words”. She can be playful, and profound, and her writing is densely packed. It’s a book that you’ll want to read again to take-in what you might’ve missed on your first pass.
Ultimately, I’d consider this novel a taster of what Karen’s capable of. It’s frequently said that a new talent has burst onto the scene but Karen’s the real deal. Armed with a word processor, she’s something more than special. Get this novel and you’ll be jumping in at the ground floor for a career that might well fly higher than many of us dare imagine.

Wow! I have just finished this novella, by the supremely talented Karen Little, and I am already looking forward to re-reading it.
Ghosts starts off with a deceptively sweet beginning before hitting you with one of the darkest, hard-hitting opening chapters I have had the pleasure to witness; beautifully dark, gloriously garish and intriguingly enticing. The reader is then lead through a tapestry of individual perspectives, as the actors render their stories for consideration. The narrative arc is strengthened by this method; and never falters.
This is fresh writing; alert, unique, challenging, experienced.. words of wisdom, innocence, fragility, and strength.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book, and predict that we will hear much more from Karen Little in the future.Pdenman, 5 out of 5 stars. Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk.
Everyone should read this book.
A brilliant read. I am completely in awe of Karen Little and her absolutely remarkable and perfect way with words. I was thrown into the story immediately. The characters are all fascinating and I read Filled With Ghosts so quickly to find out what would happen to them. The writing is beautiful and exquisite. I felt emotional at times because this author made me see and feel everything that was going on. I will treasure this book. Always. And I will read it again. Slowly, next time. I wish to savour each delightful word.

Filled With Ghosts is the first in the Spanish Spectres series. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is set in southern Spain, where seven characters’ lives intertwine—the events binding them together are as strong as their need to escape. Diana and Miguel live with their fifteen-year-old daughter, Heena, at his mother’s house. Tila considers her psychotic episodes to be mystical experiences, and becomes obsessed with Heena—convinced she is a magician and guru. Miguel has an affair with wealthy Catalina and, when he gets her pregnant, marries her for her money. He continues his relationship with Diana, dividing his time between the two women. When the violent past catches up with Miguel and Diana, they have to somehow deal with the consequences.
